POOR MONEY SKILLS THREATEN OUR KIDS’ FUTURE HAPPINESS
Schools and Parents Are Shortchanging Teens on Financial Education

Book signing: June 28 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Market Block Books, Troy

TROY, N.Y. (6/9/14) — Today’s schools and families are failing to convey the knowledge and skills our children will need to effectively manage their finances as adults. Don Bell, a retired educator who lives in Troy, N.Y. aims to address this deficiency in his newly released book, “Money Life$avers: What Teens Need to Know About Money.”

“The world of money in the 21st century is becoming more complex by the day,” said Bell. “There’s an urgent need to increase financial literacy around the globe. Without a high level of money smarts, our kids may fall prey to all kinds of financial pitfalls. My goal in writing this book was to equip American kids with the wherewithal to successfully manage their money. With this foundation they’ll be on their way to living happy lives and achieving their dreams.”

The book — geared toward teenagers, their parents and their teachers — is loaded with practical information and advice for kids on everything from smart spending habits to banking, budgeting, saving, handling credit cards, gambling, protecting against fraud and much more. Teachers and parents will find the book a great help in jumpstarting kids’ grasp of good money management practices.

As the topic of money can be dry, Bell strives to add fun to the learning process. To actively engage kids, he has organized the book’s contents into a question and answer format and included instructions for playing various quiz games.

“I remembered the fun I had playing ‘Monopoly’ as a kid, but I didn’t learn much of practical use,” said Bell. “Later on I realized that besides entertainment, games could be used to convey educational material. So my first foray into financial education was to design a board game to teach kids the everyday mechanics of good money management. The board game eventually morphed into a card game (like Trivial Pursuit) and finally emerged as a book with a game component.”

For more fun, Bell has peppered the book with colorful quotations, money trivia and lively, topical cartoons.

The book’s content is based on two notable resources:

— “Money As You Grow — 20 Things Kids Need to Know to Live Financially Smart Lives” (developed by the President’s Advisory Council on Financial Capability)

— “The National Standards in K-12 Personal Finance Education” (developed by the Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy)

For many young people and their mentors, this entertaining and informative book could indeed be a money lifesaver, Bell said.
